German 203 This course is designed to develop and expand language and cultural awareness skills in German through classroom discussion, conversational exercises, structured listening practice, reading and discussion of literary and non-literary texts of increased difficulty, and composition writing in German. Students will also complete exercises that will help develop their vocabulary and expand their knowledge of German grammar. At the end of the semester, students should be able to listen to simple conversations or stories and understand them, read and understand short texts, engage in brief conversations or listen to short stories and understand them, read and understand authentic texts of moderate difficulty, and write short essays on familiar topics using the vocabulary and linguistic structures learned. Students will work on reviewing and strengthening their knowledge of German grammar and practice both written and verbal communication on topics of general interest. Students will work on acquiring the vocabulary and conversational strategies needed to discuss issues and challenges of contemporary life in German-speaking countries. At the end of the semester, students should be able to listen to more advanced conversations, reports, or stories in German and understand them, read and understand more short German texts, express their opinion on important issues, and write short essays on topics that are important in German-speaking countries today.
